8 Ways to Clear Your Mind in a World of Negativity

With the daily news blasting information about the current state of our world every hour, it can feel a little overwhelming. You hear news stories, radio discussion, see billboards, etc. Of course, you want to stay informed on what’s happening around you, but sometimes it’s a lot to handle and you want an escape (or to at least feel some sense of positivity). Before letting the chaos of the world get to you, try the following methods to help you stay grounded when you’re surrounded by negativity.

Go for a walk

Often times, we forget that emotions are quite literally energy in motion. The best way to treat pent up or unwanted emotions is to expel the energy by doings something active such as going for a walk. Going for a walk gets you moving and forces you to focus on what’s happening right then and there so you can watch where you’re going, listen to bikers passing you, listen for cars, observe nature, etc.

Meditate

At the heart of all grounding practices is meditation. Even if you have never meditated before, consider doing so now. Start small as meditation takes practice. We recommend starting at about 5-10 minutes and allowing any negative or intrusive thoughts come and go without acknowledgement. It may also be beneficial to try different kinds of meditation such as visual, auditory, or olfactory!

Practice yoga

Yoga is a great way to slow down your mind and force yourself to focus inward, rather than feeling overwhelmed by everything you cannot control. There are thousands of yoga videos online for all activity levels, fitness levels, and purposes.

Write it down

Sometimes, staying grounded when you’re surrounded by negativity comes down to getting the negativity out in a physical form. The best way to do this is often by writing it down in a journal or notebook, or even typing it into a document. This process gets those chaotic and roaming thoughts out of your head and will often lead to a more relaxed, positive state of mind.

Talk to someone about it

Pending your personal life, talking to someone about how you’re feeling can also help as it’ll allow you to voice your concerns and have a conversation about them with someone. Try to find someone who will be a positive voice for you during this time, not someone who will further contribute to your negative feelings.

Take a soothing bath

Doing something to calm the physical body is a fantastic way to reduce those negative feelings you have. Often times, creating the soothing environment of a bath by lighting candles, sprinkling in bath salts, plopping in a bath bomb, is enough help ease any negativity you may be feeling!

Light a candle/essential oil fragrance

If you are someone who is sensitive to smells, lighting a candle or using an essential oil diffuser can be highly beneficial. Sometimes, all we need is a little sense of comfort in our day and maybe the smell of an apple pie or lavender can do just that!

Feeling surrounded by negativity and experiencing intrusive thoughts is a lot for anyone handle. It’s important to have a few practices you can turn to in order to help you ease such emotions and find positivity where you currently don’t see any. Try doing something physically active, lighting your favourite candle, or even talking to someone about how you’re feeling and you’re sure to start to feel more grounded and positive!
